Taxing the Dream of Homeownership is a Bad Idea

Owning a home is the result of hard work, personal responsibility and sacrifices. Homeownership is one of the best ways to build wealth and is part of the American Dream.

Last year, thousands of North Carolinians voiced their opposition to a proposed new 1% tax on the sell of property. But in the last hours of the last days of the General Assembly, lawmakers voted on a budget which now allows local governments to put a transfer tax on the ballot in local communities.

Last November, 79 percent of voters in 16 counties statewide overwhelmingly said "NO" to a Real Estate Transfer Tax. The voters understandd that taxing the equity in their homes is a bad idea when government spending in on the rise. Voters across North Carolina realize that homeownership is the result of hard work, personal responsibility and sacrifices.

Yet some politicians still want to tax the equity in your home. Adding a new tax to your home will tax your nest egg and your success. By increasing the cost of home ownership, new homeowners, working families and senior citizens will be impacted the most.
